Offers Ideas For Meeting World Food Demands
In a recent letter to the editor, William H.
Danforth, Chairman of the Coalition for Plant and Life Sciences, says dreams of feeding the world should meet the following criteria:
"Production per acre of farmland must be increased – especially in Africa. Food must provide essential vitamins and minerals to prevent such widespread tragedies as blindness and death due to vitamin A deficiency. Agriculture must be sustainable.
"It must not deplete either the world's topsoilor its supply of fresh
water. Agriculture must be environmentally benign ...
"Diversity of plant, bacterial and animal species must be
maintained."
All of which are being developed through the use of farming with
genetically-modified crops and conservation tillage practices.
