Fast-Growing Trees Help Keep Natural Forest Growing

Instead of cutting down decades-old trees for use in paper production, farmers in Thailand are harvesting fast-growing trees that are only five years old.  This has been made possible using a genetically enhanced variety of Eucalyptus tree which not only thrives on degraded land but is disease and insect resistant as well.

The company, Advance Agro Public Company Ltd, conducted a 20-year research program which culminated in the use of the GM Eucalyptus trees.

More than 10,000 farmers have joined the tree-growing program, providing the farmers a steady income while supplying the paper industry with wood thus preserving more of the natural forest.
