The Saints & Bards of the times of the Gurus

a) Bhikhan (2 hymns)

He was a Sufi saint and lived in Kakori, Lucknow, in the state wich is today called Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) He died in the early part of Akbar's reign.

b) Sur Das (2 hymns)

Sur Das, a Brahmin by caste, was born in 1528 CE and was appointed Governor of the province of Sandila by the Moghul Emporer, Akbar. He fled after squandering the state's revenue on the saints, fearing the displeasure of Akbar. He ws later imprisoned but released shortly after.

c) Sundar ( one poem called Sadd containing 6 Pauris )

Sundar was one of Guru Amar Das Ji's grandsons and he wrote this poem to depict the death of Guru Amar Das Ji

d) Mardana (3 Slokas)

Mardana ws the Muslim bard who accompanied Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his travels.

e) Satta & Balwand (one Var containing 8 Pauris)

They were bards in the court of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. They composed this Var in Raag Ramkali in praise of the Gurus.

f)Other Bhatts (poets/bards)

These 17 Bhatts appeared in the court of the Gurus at various times and wrote poems (swayyas) on their spiritual greatness.
