AIFS in Sydney: A full range of university courses including liberal arts, sciences and unique Aboriginal and Australian area studies at Macquaire University, a large research institution in a cosmopolitan city near great natural resources.
Curriculum Highlights: Australian Studies look at the myths and reality of convict culture, the European settlement of Australia, the issue of nuclear trade in the Pacific, international politics and contemporary Australian literature and culture. Aboriginal Studies are for the anthropology or cultural studies-oriented, examining how religious rituals translate into contemporary movements for land rights and exploring archaelogical sites.
Setting Description: Housing and meals in University residence halls, with on-site orientation in Sydney and a field trip to Melbourne. During breaks there are excellent opportunities for travel in Australia, southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Conservation and Resource Management: Through field work in Western Australia, where traditional aboriginal cultures offer alternate resource management practices, and on Fraser Island, a World Heritage Site, you gain insight into complex land use issues and are challenged to develop your own environmental ethic.
Curriculum Highlights: The Natural Environment; Environmental Philosophy and Ethics; Aboriginal Land Management; Environmental Decision Making; Case Studies; Educational Excursions; Environmental Field Study Seminar, and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total) Two weeks homestay in Lismore and surrounding areas. This program includes weeklong excursions to Tasmania, Fraser Island, and the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, as well as a series of day trips to sites in Northern New South Wales.
