Ecology and Economy in Belize: The opportunity to work in a supervised setting and live in a developing country affords students both rare insight into Belizean culture and practical training in their field. Requires developing a project with a home-campus faculty advisor Graded "Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory ". Internships are unpaid. Housing with families. In-country orientation provided.
Curriculum Highlights: This course examines the relationship between the ecology and economy of Belize with particular emphasis on threats posed to rainforest ecology by timber extraction and agricultural development. It also examines policies designed to encourage alternative economic activities such as eco-tourism.
Setting Description: Belize is a tiny (population 200,000) nation on the Caribbean coast of Central America. Despite its small size, Belize has an abundance of biological, geological and cultural diversity, and has enacted one of the developing world's most ambitious programs to protect its natural and cultural heritage.

Natural and Cultural Ecology: Belize is one of the most environmentally varied and ecologically protected countries in the world. In this program, you will study the water cycle and its impact on the coastal plain, mangrove forest, and barrier reef. As you study an entire river system from its headwaters in the Maya Mountains to the sea, you gain an indepth understanding of ecological systems, the relationship of humans to nature, and increasing efforts to protect this spectacular, fragile environment.
Curriculum Highlights: Natural and Cultural Ecology Seminar: Natural Ecology, Cultural Ecology, Educational Excursions; Environmental Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total) One week homestay in Belize City; four days in a Mayan village in rural Toledo District (near Punta Gorda); and two weeks in San Ignacio town.
Program Value: Fees include international airfare, health insurance, tuition, full room and board, excursions, and other direct program expenses. Participants pay for domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.

Generations of Culture: Objectives: Student will identify generational trends and changing attitudes in a third world culture and provide a basis for comparison between developed and developing nations during the intensive three week course. (3-5 university credit hours recommended.)
Setting Description: In Belize there are a variety of cultures living side by side and intermingling, yet keeping their individual identities: Kriol, Spanish, Garifuna, Mayan, Chinese, Lebanese, British and more.Ê In order to identify with some of the cultural perspectives and to feel the cultural richness of the area, Cornerstone Foundation has developed this three-week Generations of Culture program.
Program Value: Program provides an opportunity to work with youth and elderly, and includes 18 hours of Spanish,excursion to two ancient Maya sites, a river canoe trip to a medicine trail, butterfly farm and natural history center, meals, hot showers, and laundry facilities, local phone and email service, and shuttle to and from the airport.
