Overview: ITME offers intensive summer and semester-long programs in tropical marine ecology, research, and conservation at its field station in Dominica, West Indies - "Nature Island of the Caribbean". Sea-mester programs: 80- and 40-day experiential education semester programs for high school graduates and college students. Learning through interaction and practical activities, the primary academic foci of oceanography, marine science, communication and student leadership are brought from the text book into real-life application. The crew visits up to 20 individual Caribbean islands, undertaking research and service projects with local government and private organizations while simultaneously working toward certifications in sailing and diving. No experience is necessary.
Curriculum Highlights: Accredited academics; PADI scuba certifications and US Sailing certifications; American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certifications; Service projects.
Setting Description: Students live full-time aboard 88-foot schooner, Ocean Star, or 46-foot catamarans as they voyage throughout the Eastern Caribbean basin.

Tropical Marine Biology in the Bahamas: Program to run again in the Spring 2000. The course is held at the GW campus during the spring semester, and then travels to the Bahamian Field Station, Bahamas during the month of June. The course consists primarily of ecological field work in characteristic tropical ecosystems such as coral reefs, turtle-grass meadows, sandy beaches and dunes, rocky shorlines, mangrove forests, estuaries, and inland lakes.
