Service-Learning in Jamaica: Connect academic study to community service at an agency that matches your skills and interests. By combining formal study with service to the local community, students find their learning takes on greater depth and meaning.
Curriculum Highlights: "Institutions in Jamaican Society" draws from anthropology, sociology, history, organization development, etc., and incorporates the learning done in the service agency. Other courses include Caribbean literature and history.
Setting Description: Service-learning students live in host families and study at the University of Technology in Kingston, a higly-respected institution that hosts students from throughout the Caribbean.
Program Value: Students learn about the society from an insider's point of view and through the service are able to connect to the community at a much deeper level than a traditional exchange student or tourist.

Culture and Development: In Kingston, Jamaica's thriving capital and cultural center, you examine the intense interaction of gender, race, and class in Jamaican society, including the country's gender-based division of labor, the marginalization of the Jamaican male, Jamaican feminist movements, and problems of social cohesion related to gender.
Curriculum Highlights: Intensive Language Study: Swahili; Culture and Development Seminar: History and Politics, Geography and Economics, Cultural Anthropology, Arts and Humanities, Rural Visit, and Educational Excursion; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total) 2-3 weeks homestay, generally in Nairobi, and 1 week in a rural setting. The program generally includes a field trip to nearby Tanzania or Uganda.
Program Value: Fees include international airfare, health insurance, tuition, full room and board, excursions, and other direct program expenses. Participants pay for domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.

East/West Marine Biology Program: An intensive marine science program where students take field-oriented courses at three marine labs in Friday Harbor, WA (fall), Discovery Bay, Jamaica (winter), and Boston, MA (spring).
Curriculum Highlights: This field-oriented program includes the opportunity for extensive use of SCUBA as a tool to complement lectures, and conduct underwater research.
Setting Description: Each segment of the program is based at a marine laboratory located in a pristine setting. Students are in daily contact with the marine environment.
Program Value: A rigorous, upper-level education in marine biology and ecology which prepares students for graduate school or a career in marine science.
