led to rapid deforestation and habitat destruction, as well as difficult
choices for the Malagasy people. With its vibrant culture, unique flora and
fauna, and stunning natural environments, Madagascar provides an ideal
setting for your exploration of complex issues of environmental conservation
and sustainable development. Curriculum Highlights: Intensive Language Study: French; Ecology and
Conservation Seminar: Malagasy Life and Culture, Ecology and Conservation,
and Educational Excursions; Environmental Field Study Seminar; and
Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total) 4 weeks homestay in Fort
Dauphin and 1 week in a rural village. The program includes excursions of
varying length to the Ranomafana rain forest, the spiny desert, Andasibe,
Isalo, and the Great Barrier Reef of Tulear. Program Value: Fees include international airfare, health insurance,
tuition, full room and board, excursions, and other direct program expenses.
Participants pay for domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.

Reserve When: Summer Southern Africa Field Program: The Southern Africa Field Program is
an annual three week summer study abroad program, focusing on the geography,
history, and politics of post-apartheid South Africa. The program is open to
students from all schools, majors, and years of study.

two-week intensive orientation on the Stony Brook campus and continues in
Madagascar on location in Ranomafana National Park. Students earn 12 credits
from the following courses: field methods in physical anthropology, primate
behavior, socio-cultural anthropology, independent research. Courses are
taught by Stony Brook and host country faculty; independent researchis
carried out in the tropical rainforest and is supervised by international
faculty conducting research on-site; students may, thereafter,
tailorresearch to their specific academic program (primatology, icthyology,
ornithology, biology, limnology, etc.) This program does not provide for
direct enrollment inhost university courses.
