influence, lively cities and mud-walled mosques, Mali provides a fascinating
opportunity for you to study the effects of modern development on a nation
attempting to preserve its unique cultural identity and reconcile gender
differences within traditional and modern contexts. Curriculum Highlights: Intensive Language Study: French; History and
Sociology of Mali; Gender and Development; Arts and Humanities; Village
Visit; Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar and Independent Study
Project (16 credits in total) Six weeks homestay in Bamako. The program
includes visits to the Niger River towns of Segou and Mopti, to fable Djenne,
to Dogon villages along the Bandiagara cliffs, and, conditions permitting,
to Timbuktu. Program Value: Fees include international airfare, health insurance,
tuition, full room and board, excursions, and other direct program expenses.
Participants pay for domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.

realistic immersion in and exposure to the culture and art if Mali. Students
will have the unique opportunity to become familiar with traditional and
modern Malian life, and to apprentice with an artist, artisan, or musician
in accordance with their own particular goals and interests. Curriculum Highlights: The program wil start with Malian Culture and
French Language Intensive in June on Antioch campus while the second and
third courses, Aesthetics and Cultures of Mali and Independent Field
Research, will take place in July and August and will be offered in Mali. Setting Description: Studies will be based in Bamako but include
field trips and site visits. While in the United States, students will stay
in dormitories on Antioch Campus; in Mali, accommodations will include small

Mali, with excursions to provide students with a comprehensive view of the
great medieval history of Malian empires, the Islamic heritage of Africa,
French colonialism, and the extensive artistic traditions of Mali. Curriculum Highlights: Earn Northwestern undergraduate credit in
French and Political Science. Practice French in a Francophone country and
study the African language of Bambara through the intensive non-credit
course. Setting Description: The program will affiliate with the research
institute, Center for Local Knowledge in Bamako and cultural immersion will
be complimented by homestays with local families. Program Value: The two-course program includes tuition, roundrip
transportation from Chicago to Bamako, homestays and lodging and admission
