Salt Lake City, UT 84108 USA Phone: 1-801-694-3321 Where: Namibia When: Fall, Spring Namibian Cheetah Conservation Project: Round River is assisting the
Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) in their efforts to monitor Cheetah
demography and reduce threats to its survival. Student assistants are needed
to track the Cheetah's movements, record prey selection, monitor other
predator activity (Hyena, Leopard, etc), and participate in local community
conservation-education efforts. Curriculum Highlights: All of Round River's student programs are
designed for students to contribute to meaningful conservation work, while
gaining field research experience and acquiring academic credit. In
addition, students may come to wrestle with answers to the questions: who
speaks for the land, the wolf; and who is native, or at what level of
society should land use decisions take place? Setting Description: Namibia, a semi-arid country in southern Africa,
has a remarkable abundance of wildlife including the largest population of
cheetahs still found in the wild. Most cheetahs are found outside national
parks, living on ranch land, where they unfortunately come in conflict with
local farmers. Thus, current livestock protection measures, which call for
indiscriminate killing of cheetahs, may be the most serious threat to the
survival of this big cat in southern Africa.
