What the Punjab University can offer to its students ?
The teaching faculty consists of nearly 800 specialists and scholars of national repute and international eminence. Many of them have received national and international recognition, honours and awards. They represent all parts of India and have regular interaction with institutions of higher learning the world over. Several faculty members serve as Visiting Professor and Visiting Fellows at universities in Europe, U. K. and U.S.A. The distinguished Indian and foreign scholars frequently interact with the Faculty and students at the Punjab University for long or short durations. Extra-Curricular Academic Interaction The University Campus vibrates with academic interaction through Special Lectures, symposia, workshops, seminars and conferences organized by different Departments at local, regional, national and international levels. The UGC-Funded Centres of Excellence The University has the University Grants Commission supported:
On the basis of all India assessment, the UGC has identified ten other Departments of excellence for its Special Assistance Programme (SAP). These include Sociology, Geography, Geopolitics, Philosophy, Education, Business School, Statistics, Anthropology, Pharmaceuticals Sciences, and Zoology. Aided by the well-equipped laboratories, specialized reference libraries and sophisticated equipment, the teachers and students are engaged in research in several front-line areas. There also in national and international collaboration in research. The University offers postgraduate research programmes leading to different degrees. At its last Convocation held in March 1998 over 300 research degrees were awarded. The University has instituted special Chairs in different areas exclusively for furthering research. The research findings are disseminated through books, research papers and periodicals. In addition to the journals of some individual Departments, the University publishes three Research Bulletins for Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts. These interdisciplinary research journals are referred and internationally recognized and circulated. The Diploma and Part-time Courses The University offers twenty-nine Certificate and Diploma courses. Some of these related to foreign languages (German, French, Russian, Slovak, Chinese and Tibetan), and Persian, Tamil, Urdu and functional Punjabi. There also are Diploma courses in Hindi and Punjabi Translation, Punjabi Language and Culture, Office Organization and Procedures, Statistics, Gandhian Studies, Population Education and Health and Family Welfare. The basic courses in the use of computers are open to the Faculty and students. The Department of English organizes courses in communication and Human Resource Development. The Central Library of the University is one of the largest libraries on the Indian subcontinent. Its five story building is centrally air-conditioned and has spacious reading halls and compact stack areas. The Library has a collection of nearly six lakh volumes - both rare and the latest, and 600 current periodicals with the back numbers going as far back as the nineteenth century. There also are 1500 rare manuscripts in classical and regional languages. This Library known after Professor A. C. Joshi, possesses facilities like photocopiers, overhead projectors, E-mail, Internet, Multimedia, GISTNIC, CD-ROM databases, Fax and inter-connected computer terminals. The specialized library of the Indian Council of Social Science Research is too located in the Central Library. In addition, the Library is linked to and supported by fifty Department libraries geared largely to meeting the requirements of students. Computer Science and Application The compute culture at the Punjab University dates back to 1966. By now an independent Department exists with facilities for working in five separate environments. It has equipped Computer Laboratories, Internet access and E-mail. Each University Department has access to the central computing, with Internet and E-mail facilities which are being extenuated to the desktops. The Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre One of the most modern instrumentation centres in the country, this set-up houses Regional Sophisticated Centre, University Science Instrumentation Centre and Centre Instrumentation Laboratory. The instruments in the Centre are for analytical, spectroscopic and structural studies of the researchers in academic institutions and the Industry. These instruments facilities quality control. Besides individuals, the Centre provides consultancy services to nearly 300 organizations to promote interaction between the Industry and Research Institutions. The Sanskritic and Indeological Studies The Vishveshwaranand Vishwabandhu Institute located at Hoshiarpur, Punjab has for a long time been a centre of Sanskritic studies and research. It offers Masters of Arts and Ph. D. degrees in Sanskrit, and its research wing focuses on different aspects of Vedic and Ideological studies. The Institute also publishes a research journal.
