The percentage of Primary, Middle
and High/Senior Secondary Schools in the rural areas in 1994 was 90.53%, 89.64%
and 72.82 % respectively catering to 70.45 % of rural population of the State.
School enrollment
The enrollment of the students increased from 35.63 lakhs in 1992
to 35.90 lakhs in 1993 and further to 36.28 lakhs in 1994.
Out of the total enrollment in schools in 1994, girls accounted for 45.53 % as
against 45.13 % in 1993, which indicates that the dropout rate among girls is on
the decline. Their percentage share in different age groups was 46.94 % in 6-11,
44.16 % in 11-14 and 42.00 % in 14-18.
Private School Network
Apart from the government schools, the state also has an excellent
network of private schools offering both English and Hindi as their medium of
instruction.
| Among
these are the DAV schools located in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana,
Jalandhar and Patiala. |
| In
addition, the state has outstanding schools run by Christian
institutions in important towns like Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar
and Patiala. |
| Apart from
Chandigarh, there are excellent Public Schools like the Yadvindra
Public School at Patiala and Mohali, |
| The
network of Shivalik Public Schools, |
| The Punjab
Public School at Nabha and the |
| Sainik
School at Kapurthala. |
The private schools offer
education as good as anywhere else in the country, perhaps better than that
available in many other states. The point to note is that a good school is
within easy reach of almost any location in Punjab.
