Council Study Center Baobab Center: If you are interested or majoring in French/Francophone studies, African studies, international relations, or development studies and are seeking an opportunity to live and study in a French-speaking West African country considered by many to be one of the most developed and democratic nations in that region, then this program is right for you. The program is geared toward students interested in continuing French language study and learning Wolof, while taking other courses in English and having a cultural immersion experience.
Curriculum Highlights: Homestays with Senegalese families, Opportunities for community service/internships, Possibility of attending regular university courses taught in French, All courses taught by Senegalese professors, Field trips to GorŽe Island and Saint Louis.
Setting Description: CouncilŐs main partner in Senegal is the Baobab Center, a cultural resource and training center operated by Africa Consultants International, a non-profit organization created in 1984. All basic language instruction in French and Wolof takes place at the Baobab Center, and homestays and cultural orientation sessions are also organized by Baobab Center staff.
Program Value: The Council fee includes tuition, housing, a meal stipend, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions and field trips, insurance, membership to the French Cultural Center, pre-departure advising, and International Student Identity Card (ISIC).

Arts and Culture: Senegal plays a key role in West Africa's arts, culture, and politics, despite its small size and population. This program introduces you to Senegal's enormous contribution to African art and culture.
Curriculum Highlights: Intensive Language Study: French; Arts and Culture Seminar: Senegalese Life and Culture, Arts and Culture, and Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total) 5 weeks homestay in Dakar, 1 week in Saint Louis, and 1 week in a rural location. The program includes field trips to Saint Louis, including its university and Park of Djoudj (a migrant bird reserve); the Petite Cote; Goree Island; Lac Rose; and, if possible, the game reserve in the national park of Niokolo Koba in Eastern Senegal.
Setting Description: The program is based in Dakar, a spacious and bustling city, juts into the ocean and the Cap Vert peninsula.
Program Value: Fees include international airfare, health insurance, tuition, full room and board, excursions, and other direct program expenses. Participants pay for domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.

Cross-cultural connections: Understanding of Global Africa: The course is a comparative study of education as the motor of development for the world. The sociological, political, societal and economical impact of education on the world development.
Curriculum Highlights: This course is 3 semester hours. The Senegal Exchange Program: Sudy the distinctive French African culture with English and French-speaking African students at Université Cheikh Anta Diop, in Dakar, the largest and reputed to be the finest university in francophone Africa. Students live with French-speaking families, and become a part of the family’s daily routine.
Curriculum Highlights: Along with courses in French African culture and its distinct literature, students also take a class in Wolof (one of the major ethnic languages). French fluency above the intermediate level is required for the program.
Setting Description: Home to more than 1 million inhabitants, Dakar is a cosmopolitan city located at the westernmost tip of Senegal and of Africa. Nearby destinations are the former capital St. Louis, bird and animal sanctuaries, tropical rain forests and Gorée Island, a staging point for the 18th and 19th century slave trade.
