Development Studies: In Kampala, Uganda's thriving capital, you examine issues of social and economic development, working closely with faculty and students from Makerere University. Through an in-depth, hands-on practicum with one of the country's many international or grassroots development agencies, you deepen your understanding of the practice of development work.
Curriculum Highlights: Intensive Language Study: Swahili; Ugandan Life and Culture; Development Studies; Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar, and Development Practicum. (16 credits in total) Three weeks homestay in Kampala and one week in a rural area. Field visits to organizations with ongoing development projects. These may include the AIDS Support Organization (TASO), the Positive Women's Network, the European Development Fund, the Ndere Theater for Development, World Vision, and World Learning.
Setting Description: Uganda is home to over 30 district ethnic groups, many dating from the days of the country's powerful indigenous kingdoms. Its tumultuous history and promising future make Uganda an ideal setting in which to study current cultural, political, and social realities.
Program Value: Fees include international airfare, health insurance, tuition, full room and board, excursions, and other direct program expenses. Participants pay for domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.
