BUILD A BIRD HOME

Often during the nesting season, sparrows (mostly) look for places to build nests. They nest anywhere they can find a little space and often flit into houses, in the process getting hit by revolving fans or banging against glass-panes. They are also highly persisitent and even when you have pulled down entire nests, they build them back very quickly.

Anyway you can do your bit to help them by solving their nesting problem by building them a home outside the house.( In case you do not have a garden or balcony to build a home for nests you can just make a bird-feeder to feed these birds and definitely enjoy many hours of bird-watching.)

Here is how to make a bird nest:

REQUIREMENTS :

A cardboard box

A shoe or a whisky bottle box

A pair of scissors

Nails

Strong tape

WHAT TO DO :

Cut a hole 1" X 1" about 6" from the top of the box. Make two holes on the sides of the box about 1/2 inch from the top (as shown in the illustration) Pass string through the holes, and tie into a knot outside. This will help you hang the box. Seal the cover of the box with tape.

Your bird home is ready. Select a place under a ledge. Hammer in the nail and tie the bird home firmly. You will be amazed at the way birds fight over this readymade apartment! And you will be treated to many fascinating hours of watching the parents raise their young. They will use the same nest year after year.
