All About Kite Flying

How many of us have felt the thrill of the tug of a kite as the string is streched to its last limit! The rush of excitement as you manage to cut another kite and then the blind wild chase after that kite with the cries of "kat gaye patang kat gaye". Indeed don't we all wait impatiently for the months of July - August - the perfect months for kite-flying.

Ever wondered how and when this sport started? You may be surprised to know that in fact one of the most ancient hobbies around the world is kite flying. Originally it was a game played by rulers, however it soon turned into a game enjoyed by millions all over. It also soon became a well- known form of sport. Even world records for different aspects of kite-flying have been made all over the world and the game has now become a competitive one instead of just being a hobby.

Types of kites

You all must be familiar with the diamond - shape kites that are most commonly available in our Indian cities. But did you know that there are a wide variety of kites flown nowadays. Some of these are: single line kites including diamonds, deltas, dragons, newest advanced dual & quad line stunt kites etc. In the picture below you can see the very different type of kites flown in our own country - in Chennai. Kites are made of light material usually of paper but also of polythene. It takes quite a long time for one to become a pro at kite-flying but it's worth the effort.

These kinds of kites are flown in Chennai at the Marina beach which is the second longest beach in the world. They can attain great heights and can withstand a considerable amount of turbulence.
