Terrorism in Punjab

"Ask your son to save you, if he can"

The incident manifests an act of cowardice on the part of terrorists, who killed even the harmless women in the mindless shoot out. On August 13, 1992 at around midnight about half a dozen armed men came at village Tarsika (Majitha, Amritsar). They forced their entry into the house of one Das Singh, whose son was working as a cop in Kapurthala district. They first intimidated the family that they are being killed because their son is working in the police forces. "Ask your son to save you if he can," the terrorists challenged. Then they started firing on the innocent family members. Six people got killed. Two of them were women.

Target the migrant labourersPunjab Trauma4a.jpg (18791 bytes)

Killing of migrant labourers had become a sort of trend in Punjab. The aim of terrorists was not only to scare the people at large, but also to destabilise the economy of the state, because most farmers in Punjab are highly dependent on labourers from other states. These labourers are relatively low-cost and come to Punjab in search of their subsistence. This is such an incident, in which five labourers became targets of the terrorists' bullets. On May 19, 1988, these workers were about to go to sleep after taking their dinner. At around 8.30 P.M., eight terrorists came at the residence place of these workers in village Chhinna near Amritsar. Without any provocation, they started firing at the workers, who started running here and there to save their lives. Five could not succeed.

Family killing Near AmritsarPunjab Trauma6a.jpg (17549 bytes)

On April 28, 1992 at 10.30 P.M., there was a commotion in a street of a village near Amritsar town. It is a summer season in Punjab during April. Also, this is the harvesting period. People generally, after coming backPunjab Trauma6b.jpg (17429 bytes) from their work, sleep in the open. It was one such night. A joint family was sleeping in the house. One family member suddenly saw about eight armed men in the street. They were terrorists, who were trying to use a make-shift ladder to climb up the house. The familyPunjab Trauma6c.jpg (18136 bytes) member sensed something wrong, and asked his relations to run away. He too started running in the street towards the farm. While running, he heard the sound of bullets. At the dawn time, when he came back, everything was finished for him. The terrorists had killed eight of his family members. Before escaping, they burnt a few shops also in the area.Punjab Trauma6d.jpg (32107 bytes)
