Terrorism in Punjab

Seed farm Shoot-out

The cruelty of the Punjab terrorism was at its peak in the late eighties. The fact is manifested by the seed farm shoot out case of Lodhuwal, in which 19 innocent persons were first tied up with ropes, and then mercilessly killed by the terrorists. The incident goes like this. On November 4, 1992 at about 8.40 PM. the workers at the seed farm, Lodhuwal (which is a Govt. seed farm on the out skirts of Ludhiana towards the river Sutlej) were about to take rest after the day's hardwork. At that time, seven terrorists armed with AK-47 rifles came to the seed farm, at gun point tied up all the workers of the farm with ropes and started firing on them. Ninteen workers lost their lives.

Twelve lost their lives

It was a chilly winter morning. January 8, 1991 to be precise Harbans a resident of Doraha Mandi had gone to village Sangowal, Ludhiana for some work. When he was coming back on his motor-cycle, three unknown terrorists stopped him, and at gun point kidnapped him alongwith four more passers-by. The terrorists took them in their car to the house of one Surjit Singh. Detained all the innocent persons there for a while. After some time, the terrorists came back alongwith five more accomplices, only to kill 12 persons detained in the house.

17 farm workers killed

In North India including Punjab, November is the time when winter season sets in. Most workers go to bed early after their days toil. The evening of November 30,1992 was no different for the farm labour - migrated from other states - of village Silo Kalan, PS Dehlon, till 7,O'clock. It was the time when three terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles started forcing 17 labourers at gun point into an 80 sq.ft. tubewell room. When all the workers were stuffed in to that small room, the terrorists started firing on them mercilessly, killing all of them.
The objective of such killings was not only to spread terror, but also to disrupt the economy of the state. For, Punjab's rich farmers are mostly dependent on migrated labour from other state for crops sowing and harvesting. Thousands of poor workers come to Punjab for earning their livelihood through farm labour. And mostly such labourers are the sole earners for their families staying in their home towns. Killing one such worker means the genocide of an entire family. Perhaps, the killers didn't realise.

Quila Raipur Killings

It was the last dusk for eight innocent people of village Quilla Raiur, PS Dehlon. On June 25, 1992 at around 7:45 PM, five terrorists armed with AK-47 rifles forced their entry into the shop of one Naresh Kumar. At gun point, they took him alongwith seven more persons present there, near a historic Gurdwara (religious sikh temple) Ranga Patti. Screams notwithstanding, the killers shot all of them dead. This mindless massacre not only stunned the village and adjoining areas, it sent shivers down the spines of millions of Punjabis wherever they heared or read about this terrible happening.
