Chajj-Sota

The chajj-sota is commonly used by giddha dancers. Chajj means a winnowing basket and sota means a stout stick: the chajj-sota is a rhythm instrument. Rubbing the stick across the basket produces a rasping sound. A dancer may carry the chajj-sota and play it as she dances, or it may be played by the accompanists. Occasionally ghungroos, bells, are tied to the stick to add to the effect.
