Esraj
This is a bowed instrument on the pattern of
the sarangi with the sound-box the same width as the sitar's.
It is probably older than the dilruba, and like it, the esraj
has a skin-covered sound box. The bowing style is like the
dilruba's. It is recognised by its round shape and shallow
sound-box. Beneath the four main strings of steel or brass are
15 to 20 tarab, sympathetic strings, which increase the
resonance and timbre. The pardae, frets, number between 16 and
19. The esraj is usually unadorned.
