Ghada/Gaggar |
This is globular earthen (or rarely, silver,
brass copper or aluminium) pitcher, one foot high and nearly
two feet wide at its widest circumference, with a mouth nine
to 12 cm wide, thickened at places to produce varied notes.
The ghada can be played upon in two ways. The first is to play
it while keeping it in the lap with the mouth fully open. The
second is to place it in front of the player and alternately
close and open its mouth. It is played with both hands and the
musician wears rings to make the beat sharper. The earthen
ghada may be painted and the metallic ones are engraved. The
ghada was played by hunters as its notes were said to attract
deer. Sohni-Mahiwal invariably sung to the beat of the ghada.
