Jhallar |
Jhallar
of manjiras are large, heavy cymbls. Used mainly for aartis or
kirtans these were once a part of military bands. Because of
their weight sometimes two men take turns in playing them.
Thick chords or cloth bungs are passed through the central
holes in each instrument. The chords are then knotted: the
players wind these chord around their hands for a firm grip.
Sometimes the grips are wooden blocks tied with leather
thongs. Colourful tassels on the cords or thongs constitute
the decoration.
